How to Become a Global Citizen

If you already know what is global citizenship, there’s a good chance you might already be thinking about taking it up. Maybe you’ve developed a passion for global citizenship and deem it the ideal route to follow. Either way, you need to be sure of what it takes to become a global citizen before you finally get going.

Keep in mind a global citizen is an individual who is aware of the world and carries with them a sense of their role in it. That explains why a significant chunk of global citizens are respectful, value diversity, and are committed to defeating social injustice. If this is not enough, they tend to be creative, flexible, dedicated, and proactive.

The good thing about becoming a global citizen is that it allows you to deal with issues of global interdependence, diversity of identities and cultures, sustainable development, peace and conflict, and inequities related to power, resource, and respect. Not to mention it carries a huge impact on our individual and collective mental health.

That brings the question, what does it take to become a global citizen? For starters, you need to find your passion and be inspired by places you would like to visit. What we are trying to mean is that you should always motivate yourself to learn more about the global community.

It doesn’t end at that since global citizens are always hungry. For this reason, you should take it upon yourself to explore global cuisines and eat at different traditional restaurants. Try as much as possible to learn about the language, culture, and owners. There’s nothing wrong with buying a cookbook and trying out a few recipes to hone your skills.

Of course, you should also find ways to establish friendships with people from different cultures. This has the potential to help you exchange perspectives, learn more about their culture, and have a little fun along the way.

Reaching out and becoming a global citizen is precisely what you need to support the fundamental needs of belonging somewhere and feeling connected and improve your mental health and well-being.
