New survey of health experts has given one clear message about living longer and in a healthier way: when it comes to aging healthy, everyday fundamentals continue to trump fancy bio-hacks, gadgets and supplements. Physical activity and healthy food both came out top from 89% of experts with good quality sleep ranking next highest. The results are drawn from the second annual U.
S. News Healthy Aging Survey where 63 longevity practitioners, medical doctors, registered dietitians, researchers, and fitness specialists were questioned what really moves the dial for healthspan. In a wellness-booming market, where peptides, wearables, and emerging treatments vie for attention, the panel moved beyond these flashy new interventions and emphasized the building blocks of which the rest is built: continued motion, sound nutrition, and deep rest.
To sum up, Shanley Chien, the health editor-in-chief at U.S. News, concluded that all of the established, simple habits of living a healthy lifestyle, such as having a good diet and an active lifestyle, can contribute to people living longer, healthier lives. The survey pointed out social connection is a crucial and underestimated factor in one’s life. Up to 60% of experts suggested that social isolation is the most ignored component that speed up biological aging, better than lack of sleep or long-term stress. This research lands at a time of widespread attention to longevity tools; for example, it’s still common to hear discussions of GLP-1 drugs for weight and heart health.
Still, three-quarters of respondents to this survey cautioned that “excessively rapid loss of muscle is an important threat for people taking [GLP-1 drugs] without taking appropriate steps to preserve lean body mass via strength training and sufficient protein.” Among women, researchers highlighted “unrecognized threats of perimenopausal/menopausal loss of muscle and bone” as well as “under-recognizing cardiovascular risk in women”. For technology, respondents expressed moderate caution.
Only 40% expressed significant potential in wearable health monitoring devices, and just under a third reported that none of the biohacking topics presented had demonstrated benefits. A quarter found value in artificial intelligence tools in their potential application in behavioral coaching, with others unable to report any measurable healthspan impact. This presents a functional vision of lifespan that doesn’t feel intimidating or out of reach.
Gains in musclemassthrough strength training, consumption of low-inflammatory food, prioritization of sleep, and social connections continue to be the recommendations with the most compelling scientific backing. There are few thrills involved in building these habits, but they pay off over many decades unlike more expensive interventions alone. This doesn’t negate the need for innovation though.
Most authorities are still open to devices which aid in these basics. wearables to track progress and medicines to perhaps provide real advantages if combined with a change in lifestyle. The key here is the sequence; to implement more complex methods with no foundations will only produce minimal benefits.
